Frederica Mathewes-Green

20th Anniversary Retreat

OWHM is pleased to welcome Frederica Mathewes-Green as our speaker for the special anniversary retreat this year.  Holding a degree in English and a MA in Theological Studies prepared her well for her work as an author who has published 9 books, and 700 aritcles.  In addition she has appeared as a speaker over 500 times and been interviewed almost 700 times by such venues as Prime Time Live, NPR, PBS, CNN, NBC, Fox News, and by Time, Newsweek, the New Republic, and the New York Times.

Facing East: A Pilgrim's Journey into the Mysteries of Orthodoxy (HarperCollins,1997) was found on secular book stores about fifteen years ago.  Many of us who read her book were introduced to Orthodoxy for the first time.  Since then she has continued to publish books including The Ancient Desert Prayer that Tunes the Heart to God and The Illumined Heart: The Ancient Christian Path of Transformation. Best Christian Writing selected her essays for 4 years and in 1998 and 2007 Best Christian Writing included her writings. 

Her speaking engagements have included Yale, Harvard, Princeton, the Smithsonian Institute, Washington National Cathedral, the Family Research Council and the National Right to Life Committee.

Khouria (Mother) Frederica and her husband were married in 1974.  Father Gregory Mathewes-Green is the founding priest of Holy Cross Orthodox Church near Baltimore, where they continue to be the spiritual Father and Mother of their parish. Their three children are married and they have eleven grandchildren.
